Could these blog posts perhaps be interesting to you? Granted, it mentions RichFaces 3.3.3, and I'm not sore if that's the same version that you are having trouble with, but the same trick of replacing the outdated version of Sarissa that is embedded in RichFaces with a more up-to-date and/or patched one might work for you as well. Be careful with the examples on those blog posts, though: it turns out that his proposed fix ends up breaking Microsoft Edge, the new generation Microsoft browser that shipped with Windows 10. Note that the latest CVS version of sarissa.js has some IE-specific fixes since 0.9.9.6 as well.
