Some time ago, I was looking for surface area estimates (to better evaluate fabric surface used) and ended up exporting the image in 3D and importing it in FreeCAD software. I asked for help on the user forum and within a few hours someone wrote a Python script to measure the surface. Works very well and it`s free.
