I use stunnel for this at the moment, could it be integrated with SABnzbd or something similar written in.

Quite a few of the news service providers are offering SSL connections so I think it's pretty relevant.

Yup, it would make things a good deal easier. I use stunnel at the moment and it is a pain to set up under Mac OS X or Linux.
