Hello,
I have a laptop with the RTL8187 WiFi interface. I installed Debian on the laptop, compiled and loaded the driver myself. Everything went fine. The network manager accessed my home wireless network and it asked me for my passphrase to connect. I gave it the passphrase and it attempts to connect but after a while the same dialog appears and asks for the passphrase again. That repeats many many times and never succeeds!
I tried it a thousand times! I entered the passphrase 100% correct, character-by-character with credentials visible but still it refuses to connect!
Before Debian I had installed Kubuntu and that didn't manage to connect as well. At least not always. Sometimes it did.
Please help! If it doesn't work I'll be forced to use Windows :( :'(

It should work. I've used a RTL8187L based device (Netgear WG111v2) on Debian Sarge, Etch and Lenny. I've used two different Access Points. With one (Netgear DG834G firmware V4.01.06) I could use WPA, with the other (BT HomeHub) I couldn't get WPA to work and had to use WEP.
Which Debian version are you using ?
Are you using WPA2, WPA or WEP ?
I'm using wpa_supplicant (on Sarge a version I compiled from source, on Etch and Lenny the Debian provided version) to manage the network connection. What program are you using as your "network manager" ?
n.b. There are many ways for "network manager" programs to control driver authentication. You probably need to specify "ipw" for this project's drivers.

I'm still having this problem with both 2.6.28 and 2.6.29. This problem arises with NetworkManager, but trying with wpa_supplicant it shows a timeout. I have tried with a new laptop I have around (a Dell) and it's working with it. I have tried with Ubuntu 8.10 livecd so the system is the same in both. In the laptop is working, but it isn't in this computer. I can attach more data. Sorry for the huge message. Please, ask me for more information if needed.

please post here lspci or lsusb. To recognize the device you are using.
If I were you I'd try to use the keys generated by the passphrase you've used.
For instance, using WEP encryption with 64 bit:
iwconfig wlan0 key [1] 1234567890
iwconfig wlan0 key [2] 1122334455
iwconfig wlan0 key [3] 6677889900
iwconfig wlan0 key [4] 0987654321
and then set the essid to see your AP:
iwconfig wlan0 essid linux
where linux is the name of your AP
BR
It should work. I've used a RTL8187L based device (Netgear WG111v2) on Debian Sarge, Etch and Lenny. I've used two different Access Points. With one (Netgear DG834G firmware V4.01.06) I could use WPA, with the other (BT HomeHub) I couldn't get WPA to work and had to use WEP.
