Tested on RedHat Linux 9:

If you set the background to an image, the image ends
up having garbage in it (semi-transparent widgets,
etc.). I'm assuming this has to do with my using a
VolatileImage for the background; it's in its nature to be
damaged like that. Not yet sure why my VolatileImage
code works okay on Windows and not on Linux...
