When generating thumbnails for a large
number of image files (I used the BSD icon
collection ;-) ,
a lot of memory is allocated by the Filer. Upon closing
the window, this memory is not released. So far,
so good, we're caching.
The problem is that there is no option to disable
the caching, nor a way to tell the filer to discard the
cache. When working with, say 5 dirs a 4000 images,
100MB of memory usage will easily be reached.

True. We only recently added saved-to-disk thumbnails. Before
then, caching everything was reasonable (since adding more
swap space was an effective way of getting a form of disk
cache).
With saved thumbnails, it makes sense to clean them out from
time-to-time, so I'll look into this during this developement
cycle...

Recent filers have a purge thumbnails button in the Options
box, which
will clear both disk and memory caches. The memory cache is
also cleaned automatically from time to time.
