A little off topic, long and and rantish, but maybe this will enlighten a few people on the list. Quoth Mr McIntyre: >I use Kubuntu >with packages from Ubuntu Studio grafted on, and sometimes I install Ubuntu >Studio and then graft packages from Kubuntu. Either way, I wind up with an >everyday user distro that's also conducive to audio work.) I would say half your hair-loss problems are due to your use of Ubuntu Studio. I myself almost gave up on Linux about 4 weeks ago - more than 10 years evangelizing the thing - after a terrible run with Hardy. I decided to upgrade to Kubuntu Intrepid + Ubuntu Studio. It was an unmitigated disaster. After finding out that there is no realtime kernel offered for Intrepid, I started researching how to install an older rt kernel and came upon an enlightening discourse where I discovered that the kernels from Hardy (2.6.26) are *seriously stuffed* as far as audio goes: crashes, xruns all over, apps hanging that can't be killed, poor audio quality, MAJOR problems with respect to Jack, etc. Added to that the fact that you STILL have to manually hack files in /etc in order to actually get low latency happening, I took one last deep Linux breath, decided to go back to 2.6.24.xx-rt, removed all the UbuntuStudio audio stuff, got rid of all those horrible audio daemons (pulseaudio/esd/artsd), hacked away at some config files and recompiled a _select_few_ audio and video apps from their respective svn/cvs/latest release, with the only exception being ZynAddSubFX, the package for which is very nicely done. The upshot is that I have a far more stable system which is, capable of processing more complex audio setups than before. Rosegarden's infamous synchronization between MIDI and audio is now dangerously close to good (hint: leave the synchronization setting on "auto" and don't touch it - ever). Apps have started working that didn't even run or segfaulted. It's a good week or two out of your musical life, but rewarding when it all comes together. I've recorded more in the last couple of hours than the previous 3 months (not an exaggeration). Advice: avoid kernel 2.6.26 and avoid the Ubuntu Studio audio stuff where possible. Sorry if that hurts anyone's feelings. - sr "Where you stand on an issue depends on where you sit." - Murphy ------------------------------------------------------------------------ SavedURI :Show URLSavedURI :Hide URLhttp://mail01.mail.com/scripts/mail/Outblaze.mail?compose=1 -- Be Yourself @ mail.com!
