Ok, got it fixed. 
For anyone in the same boat using UBStudio Hardy, the liblo0 lib in synaptic
is too old (including -dev). The version from debian works ok, and doesn't
conflict with liblo0ldbl (also from debian) when installing RG 1.7.0
alongside Ardour 2.4.1 +.
