Even a GM or GM2 synth technically has a different map on channel 10, and presumably with a hardware synth (and possibly non-SoundFont on-card synths) you can't necessarily just get that through bank selects. And anyone with two hardware synths on a single cable needs to worry about channels. But no, I don't think anyone should have to look at any of this unless it's actually going to be useful to them.
