I'm the person who "explained it to you but [you've]=20 forgotten" or whatever. :) We'll agree on this score just as soon as we agree that cricket is an exc= iting=20 sport and hot tea is a potable beverage. :) > What's the difference between our "device" (assuming it's a MIDI > device) and your "port"? Nothing. It isn't the device, but what it leaves out. / (???) - Device(Roland SC-33) - banks/programs studio < (???) - Device(IIWU Synth) - banks/programs \ (???) - Device(Yamaha PSR550) - banks/programs It's the (???) that's confusing. How to know what I'm defining instrumen= t=20 defintions _for_. There's no obvious relationship. The (???) is the por= t. =20 Whether we call it anything or not, it definitely exists, and it lies bet= ween=20 the software and the physical or emulated hardware that does the actual s= ound=20 production. Think of it as a name for the MIDI cable that connects to the Device. Th= e=20 only way to get the Device attached to the correct port is trial and erro= r. =20 In my case, it's no big deal. In Mark's case, it looks like a nightmare. The port is visible in the form of, say, "External MIDI #64 0-0" on the t= rack=20 list device picker, but in the device editor itself, there's no way to kn= ow=20 what anything is pointing to except by happenstance. But whatever. I'm not arguing. It's clear that this issue is decided. --=20 Michael McIntyre USDA zone 6b in SW VA, USA Silvan <dmm...@us...> Linux Druid ----------[ registered Linux user #243621 ]--------- http://www.geocities.com/Paris/Rue/5407/index.html |
