[Rosegarden-user] No sound from Rosegarden 1.2.3 on SuSE 9.3 and SBLive! Value (model CT4832)

I'm finally getting around to setting up a music studio on my Linux box. 
I'm excited to find Rosegarden and look forward to using it!

I can't get any sound from it, though, e.g. when I load bogus-surf-jam and 
play it.  I get sound from other audio apps (Hydrogen, XMMS), but not 
Rosegarden.  I think I loaded the soundfont OK with "sfxload 8mbgmsfx.sf2" 
(with a downloaded 8mbgmsfx.sf2).  Here's my machine:

Distro:     SuSE 9.3
Kernel:     2.6.11.4-21.11-default
CPU:        AMD Athlon 64 3000+
Sound card: SoundBlaster Live! Value (model CT4832)
RAM:        512 Mb (will probably upgrade when Rosegarden gets going)
Rosegarden: 1.2.3

Sometimes when I start Rosegarden I get a warning of "no soundcard 
available or sound support not configured yet...."  I think that's when 
jackd is already loaded, but I'm not sure.  "ps -ef" shows the following:

I'm a Unix programmer but new to Linux audio.  If there's a better forum 
for this, or a FAQ I missed, pointers are most appreciated.
