Why not bump up the RAM as far as your box will go, which should do good things for memory-bound processes by reducing swapping, and it will give you more room for soundfonts, which are also contributing to your thrashing problems. A SB Live! card can be had for cheap and would also ease the resource problem with a place to stash soundfonts away from the system RAM, as well as having more hardware synthesis to play with.
