OK, there seems to be a packaging error in the Ubuntu universe repositories and I'm trying to figure out how I can help to get it fixed. What I've found is that for rkward 0.5.0b the kdebase is KDE4 (4.4.0.66). Now from the rkward documentation on building from source, this isn't going to work.
I've used rkward on Debian 5.01 and Fedora 11, so I know it is a worthwhile effort to get the Ubuntu repositories updated. I'm willing to help. Maybe a rkward3 package is for KDE3 would solve the issue or maybe letting KDE pull in everything like the latest Fedora does?
If someone thinks this should be posted to Ubuntu, then I'll go that way.

There is a reference to some unofficial repositories on http://apps.sourceforge.net/mediawiki/rkward/index.php?title=Binaries_and_Build_Scripts that point to http://reaktanz.de/deb/rkward, but that is not accessible.

hi john,
you cannot browse my repository, but it is accessible via apt. just add it to /etc/apt/sources.list.d/rkward.list and fetch the "rkward" package (e.g. "sudo aptitude update ; sudo aptitude install rkward"). please read http://apps.sourceforge.net/mediawiki/rkward/index.php?title=Binaries_and_Build_Scripts#Unofficial_Ubuntu_repositories carefully to get the right repo for your needs, because it depends on the ubuntu, R and (maybe) KDE version you're running.

Thanks much, it works great.
rkward is now 0.5.0d
I had the plugins missing and could assign through settings.
