When I looked at the source, I didn't see any call to
InitCommonControls. This function should be the first called
in WinMain if you are using Xp manifests.
Could this be it?

I just had the same problem. I seemed to have fixed it in XP
by changing its compatibility mode to Windows 98/ME in the
Compatibility tab of the Properties dialog for hack.exe.

I just had the same problem. I seemed to have fixed it in XP
