Installing RetroShare_0.5.4.5587_debian_i386.deb on a Debian Wheezy box does not work, as retroshare depends on libssl0.9.8, but for some time Debian Wheezy has been shipping libssl1.0.0.
Is there a reason why you can't use 0.5.5c?
I can't use Retroshare 0.5.5c because it's not available yet.
Or so I thought, being misled by http://sourceforge.net/projects/retroshare/files/?source=navbar saying:
Looking for the latest version? Download RetroShare_0.5.4.5587_debian_i386.deb (5.2 MB)
which is what I had tried.
As you hinted an even newer than that latest version exists :-) , I found it at https://sourceforge.net/projects/retroshare/files/RetroShare/0.5.5c/ . This installed. My problem is solved.
This bug's title should be changed, something like "Link to newest version on website points to older version".
It'd probably be best to point to the directory, as opposed to the specific version for some particular architecture.
Thank you!
