I read the rest of the conversation and I'm just going to say two quick things.  One, on the webstart stuff, It is really quite easy to do.  I could write a tool that would handle it.  The only challenging part is that if the app needs to write to the other computer, the jar needs to be signed.

I do have thoughts on the db stuff, but for another time.
