The makefiles require GNU Make. They fail with BSD
make (this is gmake on FreeBSD).

    What is the problem caused? I thought that I was using a
    very vanilla-flovoured Makefile. I'd rather change the
    Makefile so that it works under FreeBSD than change the docs
    to say it required gmake.

    I get:
    ====== doing libs ======
    make: don't know how to make accessstuff.pl. Stop

    I don't see a rule that would apply to accessstuff.pl or
    accessstuff.pl.in... Is it relying on some implicit rule
    that GNU define? I'm no Makefile wizard!
