I'm not a Mandrake user, so I can't give definitive advice here. Many distributions (like Debian) split MySQL and similar software in at least two packages, like MySQL (server and clients) and MySQL-dev (development libraries and headers). To build software that uses libmysqlclient you need the latter package. To build and run RefDB, you need both. readline and expat should be available as binary packages for most if not all Linux distributions. A visit to the Mandrake web page or to rpmsearch.net might help you to unearth those packages. > > I am changing from Windows to Linux and the only thing that I miss are my > (very large) EndNote files that I understand I can import to RefDB. > Please report your experiences back to the list. Dear members: I am kind of new to linux, so forgiveme if my question is very simple. I am running Linux Mandrake 8.0 I am trying to install refdb-0.8.3, but I do not know from where to get the libraries: - libmysqlclient (3.22 or newer) - libreadline - expat I am running MySQL (3.23), but my /lib directory does not have libmysqlclient. I am changing from Windows to Linux and the only thing that I miss are my (very large) EndNote files that I understand I can import to RefDB. Any help will be much appreciated. Octavio. |

Hi David, glad to hear that Bib2ris works now. I'm a bit concerned about your ongoing problems with the "cannot connect" problem. This should just work regardless of your mental state. I haven't seen this here since a stupid thinko was fixed about 2 versions ago. Could you do me a favour and send the following output to the list: 1) run "refdb-bug". This will create a file "refdb-bug.txt" in your current working directory with all the details of your installation. 2) run "ps ax | grep [r]efdbd" next time you get the "cannot connect" message. I'd just like to be sure that you do not run an instance of refdbd in the background that you are not aware of. regards, Markus David Kilgour writes: > > Bib2ris is functional now Markus, once I reminded myself how to update > libraries after an installation of btparse. Bib2ris is functional now Markus, once I reminded myself how to update libraries after an installation of btparse. Using bib2ris I was able to convert some existing bibtex .bib files and proceeded to learn more about using refdb. I am having some problems of the "cannot connect to server" type when running refdbib or runbib but right now I put this down to late night fatigue. Refdba is free of the "cannot connect to server" problem right now. Will report progress. regards David Markus Hoenicka wrote: > > Hi David, > > David Kilgour writes: > > > > I just noticed I do not have a bib2ris application for refdb 8.3. > > Looking at the configure log I see that I didn't have the btparse > > libraries, nor could I find any reference to them in the unstable debian > > distribution (dselect -> select \btparse ...and similar). > > btparse is not (yet) available as a Debian package. I was approached by a Debian developer the other day who wanted to package refdb and btparse as well. I just noticed I do not have a bib2ris application for refdb 8.3. Looking at the configure log I see that I didn't have the btparse libraries, nor could I find any reference to them in the unstable debian distribution (dselect -> select \btparse ...and similar). I obtained the libraries elsewhere, installing libbtparse.a in usr/local/lib and made a symlink in /usr/lib. I recompiled and reinstalled refdb and the complaint about missing btparse went away. (make clean, ./configure, make, make install). But I still don't have a bib2ris executable that I can find. Any suggestions? I dont have the docs to hand, but I dont recall any suggestions in them about getting the libs among the early references in the docs about the prerequisite tools. I have bibtool, and I notice that btparse is part of a btool package I found references to on the net, there is also java BTools, which is something else again! regards David Kilgour |

I was reworking the adduser stuff just yesterday, mainly to switch to the GRANT/REVOKE syntax that newer MySQL versions support. I was surprised to see that refdba sets a default password at all (I thought no password was the default). Anyway, the default password is "refdb" (who would've thought). I think about adding an option to set the password for a new user with the adduser command. I also found a glitch with the default privileges for the refdbvar database. This one is only used when creating SGML databases, so many people may not have noticed this. Users need also CREATE and DROP privileges in addition to SELECT, INSERT, DELETE, UPDATE. This is easy to fix in refdbda.c or by running a GRANT command in the mysql client. regards, Markus -- Markus Hoenicka hoe...@co... http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/hoenicka_markus/ |

Juan, David, could you please confirm that "skip-networking" is active in a default MySQL install on Debian? In other words, I'd like to be sure that you didn't switch it on yourselves. I just checked my.cnf of my mysql-server 3.22.32-3 package (not the freshest one, I concede). This one does not have the skip-networking entry. Maybe the option didn't even exist in 3.22., so this is a potential problem that could screw up installs on newer systems. regards, Markus David Kilgour writes: > > Thanks for the suggestions Juan. This is kinda funny. I keep hearing from Linux people using this tutorial to get their SGML stuff working. My Debian experience made me believe that it is so easy to set up that it doesn't need a tutorial, whereas there was essentially nothing (no prepackaged product, no instructions) for Windows. That's why the tutorial is specific for Windows. I'd like to figure out a way to include other platforms someday. regards, Markus -- Markus Hoenicka hoe...@co... http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/hoenicka_markus/ |

Thanks for the suggestions Juan. Commenting out the "skip-networking" line in /etc/mysql/my.cnf got things working for me immediately without making any changes to the default settings in the new 8.3 version of refdb. Hi, I think you both stumble over an oddity of the MySQL security system. If you allow access to a database from everywhere (%) this does not include access from localhost. You need a separate entry in the appropriate table to allow access from localhost. So e.g. if you manage your users through the (somewhat rudimentrary) refdba adduser command, you'd need two separate commands for each database, one using "%" (or a subnet or something) to allow remote access, and one using "localhost" to allow local access. And to be able to do this in the first place, your MySQL administrator account also needs two entries in the MySQL user table. You have to use the mysql client to do this manually. This at least works with MySQL running on Debian stable. I specify 127.0.0.1 as the IP address of mysqld in my refdbd config file, so I don't have to use the name of the external net interface. If this behaviour has changed in recent versions of MySQL, I'd finally have to upgrade and see what needs to be changed. regards, Markus Juan de la Figuera writes: > > Hi, > > I had the same problem with 8.2 (have not tried 8.3 yet, lets see this > weekend in a new ibook :-)). Hi, I had the same problem with 8.2 (have not tried 8.3 yet, lets see this weekend in a new ibook :-)). Also using Debian/unstable. For some reason, it didn't want to connect to the mysql locally. It worked when I enabled mysql network administration (yeah, I am not supposed to do it, but I am behind a firewall), and told refdba/c to call mysql remotely (NOT using localhost, but the proper name of the computer in /etc/hosts, even from the same computer). Of course, then I had to set up the proper permissions for the mysql database... I blamed it before on my ignorance of mysql/refdb. Somehow refdb tried to use unix sockets, and mysql didn't like it... I get "could not connect to server" errors when I try to run commands in refdba. I can access refdba (get to the refdba prompt) regardless of the password or user name I use. Whatever user I log in as, including the mysql root user, I get the "could not connect to server" message when I try to run a command such as listdb or createdb. Can anyone help with this? I am running version 8.3 from sources, and had the same problem with 8.2. from binaries on debian unstable distribution. Mysql appears to be working, though this is a new application for me, obtained especially to run refdb. I have been able to create and remove databases and tables in mysql as various users. RefDB version 0.8.3 is out. Noteworthy changes are listed below. Let me know about any problems that you may encounter. regards, Markus Bugfixes: - Several less commonly used fields (e.g. SN or T3) were accidentally not implemented in the query code. With this version, queries work for all existing fields. - RefDB should now compile and install cleanly on Solaris. Improvements: - The data file installation was finally implemented. That is, all stylesheets, scripts, configuration files, and DTDs will be automatically installed and all paths and URLs will be customized according to your local installation. This should take out most of the pain of the RefDB installation, as it reduces your post-installation hassles essentially to creating or changing a few environment variables. - The configure script gained about half a dozen additional options in order to allow the automatic customization of the data files. - The interactive clients refdba and refdbc have a new command "set" which allows to modify configuration variables during a session. You can e.g. change your pager or connect to refdbd on a different server without leaving your session. The same command can be used to display the current values of the configuration variables. - refdbc, when run as a CGI application, can now automatically exit after a predetermined time. This prevents clogging the memory with hanging programs (should not happen, but you never know). - A new configuration variable for refdbc allows to display additional fields by default in every screen or html search result. - The runbib script now supports a -i option to include marked sections -- Markus Hoenicka hoe...@co... http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/hoenicka_markus/ |

Hi Juan, I just checked the code. The plain truth is: I forgot about these fields, querying them is accidentally not yet implemented. It is not hard at all though, so please expect a fixed version in a matter of days. Hi, I am having some trouble doing searches on some fields such as the ISBN number, SN. I have refdb.8.2 under linux. When from refdbc I do a getref :SN:=0684803356 on a database that includes an entry like TY - BOOK ID - 900 AU - Hemingway , Ernest TI - For whom the bell tolls ... PY - 1995/// Y2 - 1940/// SN - 0684803356 ER - it does not find it. SN, Y2, T3 do not work. It works ok with AU,TI,PY,ID, EP,AV,CY,PB. Why the interest in the ISBN? :-)I am making a quick and dirt hack to link a barcode reader (the famous cuecat) to the database... Hi Hongyi, first of all, you should go back and download the newest version (0.8.2b) as it contains a few fixes, including one for the problem you seem to bump into. I do not have access to a Solaris box, so I can only give second-hand advice here. Just the other day someone reported a successful build on Solaris, albeit only with gcc, not (yet) with Solaris-cc. Based on his input I created a small patchkit which should fix all relevant issues. So please download the latest version, apply the patches below, and try again. Chances are that it will work. If not, please keep on bugging me with the error messages you get, and I'll try to help fix the problems. regards, Markus |

Hi Jeffrey, I've uploaded refdb-src-0.8.2b.tar.gz. I hope this will (finally) fix the missing files problem. I am aware of the hassle that the RefDB installation still is. It is certainly on my todo-list to simplify the procedure. regards, Markus Jeffrey D. Kowing writes: > > Also, here is some unsolicited friendly feedback from a dumb would-be > user. I've been a bit over my head lately in attempting to get going in docbook and all the related tools, so I was afraid it was just me and that I had misplaced my brain as well as a few of your files! One of the biggest concerns I had in starting to use docbook was how to handle bibliographies, because in my earlier days I tasted the fruits of bibtex and never ever wanted to go back to hand-constructing bibliographies for each paper. Especially since it doesn't seem that the bibliography structure is very well pinned down yet in the docbook world. So I was happy to find refdb. Also, here is some unsolicited friendly feedback from a dumb would-be user. Take it for what its worth. First, your documentation is outstanding and comprehensive. However, the installation procedure is a bit daunting. Especially as concerns the editing of numerous script headers and the moving of various files here and there. Perhaps some "sed" commands in the Makefile that replace the script headers with the correct path names given at configure time would be helpful. Desired install directory variables could also be defined at configure time so that a "make install" takes care of more of the installation. You've got a great project! Thanks again. Someday I will actually have the time to get it all installed! -- Jeff Kowing jef...@js... |

Hi, I just installed refdb0.8.2 and I am happily introducing my bibtex files. I am running it on Debian/unstable. I had some problems with the mysql permissions (altough it was my first time with mySQL so probably it was expected) and for some reason it does not like to run using localhost (and a UNIX socket). My problem now is that when I try to set a AV field using PATH: I don't get any link to the file:// entry on scrn or html output mode. I am also setting the RP field to "IN FILE". Is there anything else I am missing? See for example one of my entries: TY - JOUR ID - 3 AU - Ibach,H.
