As you well know, I am partly thinking of GUI applications for this, in which there would be no distinction between the quotes and the base reference from the user perspective. >> 61. If I understand right, the above example ought to just be coded as a footnote, with the specially formatted "full" citation within it. But should this really be a different type of citation, or is there a way to handle this via a citation style? In an ideal world, I'd be able to switch between this kind of a style and author-date (in-text) without having to recode the document. Shouldn't this be possible? The other thing with this type of citation is to distinguish between the first full citation, and then subsequent short versions, ibid, etc. Bruce |

Endnote uses the backslash to=20= mark the beginning of a citation, and distinguish it from the "pre"=20 annotation. So if you wanted (see also Jones, 1999: 34), you'd have=20 {see also \uniqueID@34}. You can also use the ` character to add text=20= after the citation. So let's say you want (see also Clark 1986: 34,=20 and more=85) on formatted output. The temp citation would be: {see also \Clark, 1986 #365@34`, and more=85} The #365 is the unique record number, BTW. Bruce= |

In order to reduce redundancy it doesn't make sense to store 37 quotes of the same book, each with the full bibliographic information. This would require some mechanism to store the bibliographic information proper separately from the quotes. To clarify more: you'd have a main reference to a text, and then you could have a whole series of references with the "quote" type that contained the excerpted material but pointed to the main reference. I agree you don't want to enforce this, but it could be a nice option. Bruce |

To be clear, what I am saying above refers to a new "quote" reference type that currently exists in bibx. Sure. In Endnote, you can also do this {Jones, 1999@21,25} or {Jones, 1999@21-22}. The delimiter just tells the app that the stuff following it is a page number (or multiple page numbers), and the citation style then adds whatever prefix before it (like a colon, for example). >> 61. The moral and fiscal capacity for philanthropy was an important >> mechanism of class differentiation--separating the respectable from >> the residuum as well as the wealthy from the poor; see Peter Mandler, >> "Christian Political Economy and the Making of the New Poor Law," >> Historical Journal 33, no. 1 (1990): 87. > > That would be the \fullcite command for jurabib (there is also a > "citefull" option to set it in general). So how does one deal with the annotation in this example in jurabib? You create a footnote that has that text, and then add the \fullcite command(s)? Bruce |

With jurabib, I am citing articles like \cite[S.~716]{hayn94}, which gives me something like /Hayn/, S. 716 in the text and something like=20 Hayn, Sven: Die International Accounting Standards. WPg 1994, 713=AD721, 74= 9=AD755 in the references. I need to cite different pages from the same author, so one "hard-coded" page number wouldn't be helpful. > 61. That would be the \fullcite command for jurabib (there is also a "citefull" option to set it in general). Ciao Michael --=20 status is failure (galeon 1.2.5) |

Well, in Endnote, it is not in the database, but is appended to the temporary citation, which might look like {Jones, 1998@23}. I am forgetting the syntax now for adding other text to the temp citation, but it involves using another delimiter. As we've discussed on the bibx list, I don't think this method is ideal. I'd prefer that quotes have their page numbers associated with them, and be stored in the database. You know, I'm just looking at a history book I have on my shelf (history -- and perhaps law -- being the most demanding), and I'm not really sure how you'd deal with this kind of thing in an elegant way, though I'd urge you to think about it carefully (it's got to be possible!). Here is an example, which is an endnote (all of the references in this book being so): 61. The moral and fiscal capacity for philanthropy was an important mechanism of class differentiation--separating the respectable from the residuum as well as the wealthy from the poor; see Peter Mandler, "Christian Political Economy and the Making of the New Poor Law," Historical Journal 33, no. 1 (1990): 87. if you can figure *this* out, I'll be mighty impressed ;-) Bruce |

Any more specific ideas? I tend to want to see a "cited-page" attribute, along with attributes for maybe something like "pre-text" and "post-text." This would allow a citation like this, which is not uncommon: A citation (for more on this issue, see Jones, 1999: 34). This style tends to be more common in the numeric citation style. Historians, for example, regularly have a few lines of text associated with one or more citations. But this does raise the question of how you deal with multiple citations. Some ConTeXt users came up with a workaround for the lack of this in Taco's bib module, which has a special "citedpages" reference style. Is this feature relatively easy for you to add? Maybe in the next month or two? :-) Am starting a book project, which I'd like to do using DocBook and RefDB, but alas, I need this stuff to do so. Bruce |

Now this is a serious threat ;-) This feature is currently not supported. I remember previous discussions about the need to insert random pieces of text into citations. Once this works it would fix this problem too. I thought about using something like a formatting string in the citation element that allows RefDB to figure out which pieces it has to render literally and which are to be replaced by the citation stuff. I do have this on my list, but there's no code yet. regards, Markus -- Markus Hoenicka mar...@ca... (Spam-protected email: replace the quadrupeds with "mhoenicka") http://www.mhoenicka.de |

Looking through the docs, I can't seem to find a reference to how I get (Author, Date: cited page)? So, something like (Jones, 1999: 23). Please tell me this is there, as I really need this feature (as in, I cannot use RefDB at all without it). Bruce |

OK, got libdbi compiled on OS X, and am now going to try RefDB. I am really uneasy with the commandline though. Does this command look right? ./configure --with-docbook-xsl=/opt/local/share/xsl/docbook-xsl --with-classpath-root=/Applications/Utilities/Java/saxon/saxon.jar --build=powerpc-apple-darwin6.4 LDFLAGS="-L/sw/lib" CPPFLAGS="-I/sw/include" I am unsure of the significance of the following, however, though I sense it might be important to specify. If yes, how? --with-xml-declaration=PATH Use this file as XML declaration Any other suggestions? Bruce |

Markus, I've built the Cygwin binary for refdb-0.9.2a. It is located at http://alphonse.dnsq.org:8081/refdb/refdb-0.9.2a-cygwin-bin.tar.gz I didn't have time to run it, but I'm sure it works. I'll try to test it a little this weekend. Hope this helps. Al |

Hi all, sorry about that, but refdbd.c shipped with the 0.9.2 release contains a bug that essentially voids your serverip setting in refdbdrc and results in: '(null)' cannot be resolved as a hostname /usr/local/bin/refdbctl start: bibliography tool application server could not be started unless you use the -i option on the command line. The appended patch should fix this problem. I'll upload a fixed version 0.9.2a tonight. Sigh. regards, Markus |

Hi all, I've uploaded the RefDB 0.9.2 sources to: http://sourceforge.net/projects/refdb Bugfixes: - a few minor fixes for building on Cygwin - bibtex bibliographies now work again - fixed prefs-related crash (on selected platforms) of refdbib - fixed premature end due to debug code in refdbxp - now formats abbreviated first/middle names correctly in bibliographies if the database provides full names - fixed quoting problem in refdbc:getref command - fixed incorrect query results in getfoo and getref commands (if a getref query included a journal name, only the first reference containing this periodical was returned; commands like getjo returned as many identical hits as there were references using the particular journal name) - assorted fixes to run refdba/refdbc as regular apps within a CGI environment (think Perl or PHP). - a missing "SYSTEM" was added to Makefile.template for DocBook XML documents - refdbib now returns a proper error code for server-side errors Improvements: - now supports SQLite as an embedded database engine - med2ris.pl was extended to handle both tagged and XML Pubmed data, now runs as CGI script, the web interface now uses med2ris.pl by default - med2ris.pl and marc2ris.pl were extended to handle RefDB-style configuration and log files; they now depend on the separate RefDB-perlmod package - now strips off TeX special characters when building a citation key from an author name - refdbc:getref now displays the number of retrieved references - runbib automatically uses the refdb.cat catalog file for its (open)jade calls to make sure the driver files are found - Makefile.template and refdbnd were improved to allow changing the style by changing a single variable (this was advertised in the previous release but it actually required changing the names of the driver files too) - configure checks for the presence of the XSL stylesheets. You'll get a warning if you forget to set --with-docbook-xsl or --with-tei-xsl or if you specify incorrect paths - refdb will now use its own default SGML declarations if you don't specify other copies on the configure command line with the --with-sgml-declaration and --with-xml-declaration options. - if a runbib call fails, the refdbib output files are renamed to XY.err to give the refdbnd-created Makefile a second chance Comments and bug reports are greatly appreciated, as usual. regards, Markus -- Markus Hoenicka mar...@ca... Sorry about the installation hassles. I've been in contact with kind souls trying to package RefDB and the required libraries, but this is apparently a pretty complex task. The build system has been modified already to allow simple "debianization", but there are no deliverables yet. >=20 > But now I have started to use it and .. already run into my > first problems. MySQL *should* accept umlauts (although I have to admit I never tried) as it uses a Latin encoding by default. PostgreSQL uses the SQL_ASCII encoding by default which I believe does not handle umlauts. However, you can select a different encoding like LATIN1 with the -e switch of the refdba:createdb command, or you can make this the default by editing refdbdrc. Keep in mind that RefDB does not do anything to your data that affects character encoding. It receives sequences of bytes on one side and sends them to a database server on the other side (and vice versa when retrieving data). Everything related to character encoding happens inside the database server. If this is not all it takes to make RefDB accept umlauts, then this is a bug. I'd be greatly interested to fix it then. I already gather from this that the documentation is insufficient in this matter. > A RIS file with "H=F6=F6k" is rejected by addref, because of the two= > umlauts (eg if I replace them with o, I can add the reference fine).= > Now I edited the file in unicode mode and put the unicode equivalent= s > in. I now can at least add the reference. But if I look eg at a sear= ch > via the webinterface, I still get the ugly unicode raw code (H=C3=B6= =C3=B6k). If you send Unicode strings, the database must be able to accept Unicode strings as well. MySQL < 4.0 does not support Unicode, PostgreSQL does only if you use the UNICODE encoding in your database. As Unicode is still just a sequence of bytes, you don't get an error in either case, but you wouldn't be able to e.g. search for "H=F6=F6k". The browser display problem is most likely due to the fact that the web browser does not know that these sequences are to be interpreted as Unicode characters. I'll have to find out how the RefDB-generated HTML pages could tell the browser about Unicode if the database server uses this encoding. regards, Markus --=20 Markus Hoenicka mar...@ca...
