Well, that's your shell, not anything special to do with the 
desktop.  Explore does handle clicks to, and drawing icons on the desktop 
window, but I think it does this with a message hook, not by creating the 
window, because if you don't use explorer, or you kill explorer.exe, the 
desktp window still exists, and spy++ doesn't say explorer owns the desktop 
window.
