Hi, I am new to this mailing list. I am particularly interested in a new extension to the remote desktop protocol added in version 6.1, RemoteApp. It is something designed to remotely access individual applications, just like remote desktop but without the desktop. I have tried seamlessrdp but it is not that good, it has some glitches and it is much of a hack being built on something that was not really designed for it. The downside to RemoteApp is that currently only Windows Server 2008 can act as a server. However, an evaluation version of Windows Server 2008 can be downloaded from Microsoft's website here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=13C7300E-935C-415A-A79C-538E933D5424&displaylang=en I'm not sure about that, but I think Microsoft might also give the full version for free for students only. Assuming you have a Windows Server 2008 machine on your network, all you'd need now is a Linux client compatible with the latest additions to the protocol so that you could run Windows applications on your Linux system, seamlessly and without the glitches of seamlessrdp. That would be awesome. I want to know, has work been started to add RemoteApp support? RemoteApp compatible clients are available on Windows XP SP3 and Windows Vista. Looking at MSDN, I've seen that the documentation on the remote desktop protocol only goes up to version 5.2, so this extension is undocumented. Wireshark, here we go... |
