Hello. I had the same login issue today upon downloading raspex-ubuntu-64bit-18.10-lxde-1380mb-181022.zip; flashing the image to SD using Etcher; and booting up my Pi 3. When trying to login in with the default "raspex" (which automatically appears in the username login field) and password I kept getting a login failure and being sent back to the login form.
After finding this ticket and trying a few more times I gave "root" a try for both the username and password and got in. Not the most auspicious start for something which otherwise looks like a cool OS for the Pi.

I was using the article https://iotbyhvm.ooo/how-to-run-ubuntu-18-04-or-18-10-on-raspberry-pi/ and
it mentioned using either the default raspex/raspex or root/root for
username/password. With the username field already defaulted to "raspex"
upon booting from the flashed image, I naturally assumed it would work based
on that and the article's advice. Sorry about that.
