Good Evening, the problem arises from the implementation of the FerryConnectionModifier in the Moment. It relies on the run.getVertices() which only stores the Hexes with a station/City on a run. But sometimes this mechanismn stores an intermediate Hex and thus Mike's calculation finds that theres a water combo in between.. I noticed the RevenueBonusTemplate Class in the rails.algorithmns ? Can we use that with a negative Bonus (Malus) ? Should we create a RevenueMalusTemplate and add that to the Code ? Then Overwrite RevenueAdapter with a new Class specific for 1880 ? Or put it in the main class (dont know if there are other Games that use Malus ?). And then use the FerryConnection Modifier to cancel out the effects of the Malus ? But then again we might have to find out if on that particular vertices combination a malus exists.... Probably wont save us lots of trouble, if Stefan doesnt have an idea. Other angle: So how can one find out which route gets used between two cities (i.e. determine the hexes automatically ?) Looking @Stefan there for clues :) Regards Martin Am 28.11.2013 02:16, schrieb Michael Alexander: > There are three connections that are "by ferry". There are three connections that are "by ferry". Each connection that is used take $10 off the run. What is happening now is that if a run uses two or more connections, $10 is only taken off once. Martin: one important change (also relates to the issue of the exceptions in the toString() method mentioned in a previous mail) in Rails 2.0 is the following: All (Rails)Items use the method toText() for the text to be shown in UI display. The default implementation is to show the id of the object. toString() usually should not be overwritten, as it is only used for debugging in 18xx.log and the default implementation works fine. This allows to have different text for logging and UI display, which made reading the logging sometimes difficult in Rails 1.x. So if you have overwritten toString() in 1880 specific classes, simply change that into overwriting toText() instead both exceptions and displayed text should work correctly again. Apparently this method was declared but not used directly anywhere so far (at least i havent found the use). But of course a non existing reference lead to a null pointer exception. Guess we have to check all of our new classes for the fact that now at creation the toString() method is called :) Regards, Martin |

Martin: OK if no save file is possible, could you please forward your 18xx.log? If I start an 1880 game, it starts with a StockRound, however no commands are highlighted in for the first player. During setup of the game there is an error raised during creation of the private company JO, related to issues by creation of BuildingPermit objects. This exception is due to the fact that the constructor of BuildingPermit is protected only, it has to be public. However there are follow-up errors in the creation of Building Permit. I cannot see any exception related to OperatingRoundControl_1880. Where and when is this class created? Most likely I will have to re-read the 1880 rules now ;-) Stefan On 11/26/2013 06:43 PM, Stefan Frey wrote: > Martin: can you please send me an example save file? > Most likely due to the changed creation of Round objects. > Stefan > > > On 11/24/2013 07:28 PM, Martin Brumm wrote: >> Hi Guys, >> >> please have a look at the specific_1880 branch. Hello to all rails fans, 1.8.3. got released today. It fixes a number of bugs and glitches related to 1880 code. Our thanks go out to all the testers who sent us their reports in the last 4 weeks. The bugs reported have all been squashed (and a few more glitches that raised their heads in internal testing of the endgame). We advise people to use the Special Power of the Engineer (Building Permit in Phase D additionally) in Phase C or earlier. Currently it is possible to use the power on any turn but it wont enable the tile laying if its used in Phase D and not before for that particular turn of the target company, later turns are fine though. Contributors: Michael Alexander Martin Brumm Lars Myrin - Testing jr...@gm... - Testing Thiago Penteado - Testing Antero Kuusi - Testing Stefan Frey Stephen Yu - Testing Many thanks to all of you. The game should now be able to played with all features. If you encounter any unusual behaviour please dont hesitate to contact us via the rails-user list and remember to send a savefile! Have fun in playing (and maybe testing). Martin |

Even if games are at slightly different points in their testing, if they're not feature complete, they're not "Fully Playable". So, I don't see a strong need to distinguish 1835 from 1880 by using a fine-grained classification scale. Saying they're both at the "testing" stage conveys enough information to say that we have a high confidence that bugs will be encountered during some/most play sessions. If we start to see a distinction, it's probably because 1835 is almost ready to be marked "Stable" while 1880 has a ways to go still. So, what I'd suggest is to define the criteria we're using to classify these things and be as objective as possible about it. For example: - "In Development" - At least the XML has been written. - "Alpha" - Most major features implemented, needs lots of testing. Unlikely that you'll complete a full game. - "Beta" - All features implemented, but still could have major bugs. Full games are possible at least 50% of the time. - "Stable" - Fully implemented and tested. If any bugs are found, they will be minor. Playing nearly all games to completion can be expected. In this case, 1835 is definitely "Beta", but close to ready to be marked "Stable", while 1880 is more on the line between "Alpha" and "Beta". ---Brett. About mature and stable: Maybe the wording is confusing, however I prefer to distinguish between those games which have been out in the wild for some times and those which the developers thought are feature completed. Concrete example: How would you qualify 1835 and 1880 currently (in Rails 1.x)? I think it is clear that neither of them is as robust for play as 1830, 1856 and 18EU. Are both still in testing? However 1835 seems much better than 1880. Or is 1835 already stable/mature, even it still has some bugs open? Or is 1880 still under development. My idea is doing the same as you and Erik did in the past, put games soon into higher categories to give incentives to the players. So my proposal would be: Mature: 1830 and derivatives, 1856, 18EU "Recently released": 1835 "Released for Testing": 1880 Stefan On 11/14/2013 03:01 PM, brett lentz wrote: > The way I'd used them in the past is this: > > - Fully Playable = You can complete a game. The way I'd used them in the past is this: - Fully Playable = You can complete a game. It's feature complete. - Partially Playable = You can start a game, but probably won't be able to finish it. - Not Yet Playable = You probably can't even get through the initial auction or first turn. I'm not sure what "In Development" and "Prototype" would signify beyond the original couple of labels. Originally, this setup was to help signify to users which games they could play through with the expectation of completing and which games, if they played them, they'd be helping to QA more than they'd be playing. I'm fine with relabeling these however makes sense. The distinction between "Mature" and "Stable" seems to be splitting hairs a bit. I'd suggest using only one and not both. ---Brett. Adding 1880 to the GameSetupWindow is easy: It only requires editing the gameslist.xml ;-) Done! 1880 comes to my mind :) Von: Stefan Frey <ste...@we...> An: Development list for Rails: an 18xx game <rai...@li...> Betreff: Re: [Rails-devel] Specification of implementation levels for different 18xx games in Rails (was: [Rails-users] Bug in 18GA private auction) Datum: Thu, 14 Nov 2013 13:21:44 +0100 That is a good idea. The missing bit I am currently working on, and that I have to finish to release an alpha version of Rails 2.0 is the GameSetupWindow, that was the reason to bring that up at the moment. So if there are others features people would love to see there, it is a good time to bring them to my attention now. However I will only add the easy ones immediately ;-) On 11/14/2013 12:27 PM, Phil Davies wrote: > I like these definitions, tidies things up a bit. > > Maybe an addition to the game setup screen that lists the definition > as you have stated it above? That is a good idea. I like these definitions, tidies things up a bit. Maybe an addition to the game setup screen that lists the definition as you have stated it above? Most users aren't going to check the wiki after downloading the software On 14 November 2013 10:11, Dr....@t-... <Dr....@t-...> wrote: > > > Hi Stefan, > > sounds good and should find its way into the general announcement page of > Rails, the wiki and into the Readme imho. > > > > Regards, > > Martin > > > > Von: Stefan Frey <ste...@we...> > > An: Development list for Rails: an 18xx game > <rai...@li...> > > Betreff: [Rails-devel] Specification of implementation levels for different > 18xx games in Rails (was: [Rails-users] Bug in 18GA private auction) > > Datum: Thu, 14 Nov 2013 10:44:51 +0100 > > > > > > Given that some games (1830 and all direct derivatives, 1856, 18EU) are > > > > pretty mature and others (1835, 1880) are still in the bug fixing cycle, > > I suggest a new label for the stable games.
