OK, I'm glad to see the usual suspects are on board :)
I think we agree, that the first and foremost step is to check-in my mentioned tarball.
I'm just thinking about the best branching model, but what I pick in the end should be sufficient in order to compare the different approaches like curves, my idea etc..
In the end they are not so different. My first step at that time was to inspect the curve-code and to implement it a bit differently, but not so much. These are technical discussions we can proceed with, as soon as all things are visible.
We also would have the font issue fixed and could maybe backport and release 0.2.8 in order to fix this and only this cleanly as a last version inside the 0.2. branch.
Something completely different first, though:
I'm not very satisfied with some infrastructure choices I made in the past regarding sf.net now.
My current email client thunderbird seems to be a bit handicapped when it comes to mailing lists, even this one (A bit a shame for an Open-Source program with his impact). Also, the parallel existence of forum and list is at times a bit cumbersome. The sf standard forum is horrible in particular when it comes to posting/formatting etc.
What would you guys think - should we unify things in setting up phpBB (provided from SF) as single point of communication?
Other things here could change too, VCS and Bugtracking perhaps, but step by step.

I would agree with an updated 0.2.x release.
I did not say it in my previous private email, but I think we should then issue a development release of the multiple_curves_0_2_x (which would be the new trunk in my proposal. I'm not sure if that should be version 0.3 or what, but once we incorporate Micha's code, we would need another version number anyway.

I have the same issue with Thunderbird. I have never found the right extension to make it behave the way I like. So, for my mailing lists, I run kmail, which handles them very well.

I agree that the parallel forum and list is cumbersome. I prefer a mailing list and no forum, but I assume that I am in the minority with that opinion. I like the power and flexibility I get from my mail client. However, I would be willing to put up with a forum. It would be great if we had a setup like OpenSceneGraphwhere the mailing list and forum are cross-populated. In the meantime, phpBB would be an improvement.

I thought someone would suggest a VCS change before too long. I still like subversion well enough. Nonetheless, assuming that we will switch to something else, I prefer Bazaar over git for reasons that I won't get into yet. I've read good things about Mercurial but I haven't actually used it, so I don't have an opinion on it yet. But, as you said, let's do things step by step.
Updating the code in the existing repository and making near-term releases are the most important priorities. I see that you are starting some of those changes while I type.

I dcommited all the changes and it seems it went more or less well (some newer tags are missing). My changes are now at head of trunk. Caused by my illiterateness in some git areas this was the easiest option. It means no ingrained preference on my side. As a result everyone can compare with multiple_curves_0_2 (don't remember to the non-x variant).

They seem to use the mail2forum option for phpBB. If this is supported by SF's phpBB forum implementation, it should be the best of all worlds. I'll check this. Please postpone technical discussion about further development behind this evaluation (I'm in the process ).

SF doesn't seem to support mail2forum. But I think, the situation isn't that bad. The extension is out there and phpBB admins (for example me, in this case) here can download the boards full database, so this issue could be resolved in future also on a server with full access or similar. Something I'm not eager to do at this moment. It's a bit schizophrenic to open a third communication line, but I would prefer to dry out the former two slowly (but closing them eventually). They also contain some discussions & feature requests I would transform piece by piece in a board discussion, preferably not in one step.
User registration seems to be connected to SF account. I hope, this is enough, otherwise I would create (reluctantly) guest posting rights in a special sub-forum.
What do you think about the approach?

You are correct that a third line of communication doesn't help. So, let us pause the mailing list for now. Would you like me to disable the mailing list for now?
Is there a way to import the old forum messages into phpBB? It appears that I am not an administrator on phpBB.

Perhaps a last round-mail to the list with a pointer to this thread would be a good idea. But afterwards, I agree.

I didn't find anything like this.
It appears that I am not an administrator on phpBB.
It seems to be a bit opaque. On the one hand, I saw a number of 3 as administrator count in the user management panel. On the other hand only one (me) appeared in the related list. Even the "Grant Rights" link on QwtPlot3D's SF project administrator page does nothing for this application (phbBB).
Could you stay logged in in SF/the phpBB forum? Maybe I'm able to grant the rights then.

… or bind to the phpBB board in the case of the mailing list (in principle I prefer lists too). So, it would only be a pause for the list.
Thank you for committing your code.

Yes, I will be logged in for a while.
Check now. I also sent an email to you for aan alternative. Quoted:
I think, I found it:
Go to https://sourceforge.net/projects/qwtplot3d/
-> "Project Admin"
-> "Feature Settings"
-> "Enabled Features" -> phpBB -> "Grant Admin"
This one should grant rights to your SF user account
