The answer is quite simple: the first version of Qwt was written for Qt 1.x 
(1997 !) what offered only a very limited set of widgets ( f.e no QSlider ! ). 
So at that time the implementation of the Qwt widgets needed to find its 
individual design. QAbstractSlider came many years later with Qt 4.x.

I agree, that all classes derived from QwtAbstractSlider should derive from 
QAbstractSlider ( if possible ), but changing the widget class design was 
never done.
