AFAIR you also need to build the designer in > debug mode to be able to load the Qwt designer plugin. I think the easiest is to have one debug and one release path for each version of the object files etc. I'm not sure when you use a dll version of the library, but I found when using a static lib I got a lots of errors when using the qwt out of the box without modifying the build into separate debug and release paths.
