Hello gentlemen. First, Ali, forget my previous mail about qvwm-background. It runs properly, except for a minor bug, the program adds a ";" at the end of the .qvwm/background. qvwm complains about it: "invalid accesory mode: Background;", but doesn't crash.=20 By the way, I have been experimenting several crashes until I realized that the problem was my .qvwmrc. qvwm does not restart but quit with a seg fault, and doesn't quit properly, but restart (really funny, when I want to restart, I tell it to quit, and viceversa ;) Removed my .qvwmrc, copy the system default, edited, and now runs smoothly. I like specially the qvwm-run thing, and would like to add to the whishlist an history for it (a la grun, for example). There are a couple of things with this version: If the .qvwm dir does not exist, qvwm create it with a very strange permissions: /home/foobar-> ls -d .qvwm 4,0K d-wxr----T 2 foobar foobar 4,0K 2003-10-23 18:12 .qvwm Workaround: mkdir .qvwm, and wait to qvwm for filling it.=20 And the icons (shorcuts). With the CVS version, I edited .qvwmrc, and put the icons of my choice. With qvwm-14102003 you can't do that. You must edit .qvwm/desktop with qvmw _not_ running, or you see how your changes disapears in the next restart. Very frustrating till you realize this.=20 =20 I guess you are working in the qvwm-newicon function, as at the moment it doesn't work. Same for QVWM_EDIT_ICON and QVWM_PROPERTIES_ICON. =20 That's all, folks. I hope tomorrow will begin with new translations. I prefer betatesting than translating, there is more fun.=20 P.S: nothing to add to the numlock issue. I agree with Mitch. And will not use clicktofocus. Never.=20 Hasta la vista, amigos. =20 --=20 Benjam=EDn Albi=F1ana P=E9rez "Ni neutro-balance, ni pollas. Dos hostias bien dadas. Tira pa'delante m=ED= o..." Hi Benjam=EDn, I have talked with Ali. Finally, I understand what he's saying! :-) Assume that you have ClickToFocus set to True (which I don't, I like focus-follows-mouse), and that you have two windows (maybe xterms) open. You already know you can change the focus between one and the other by clicking the bar on the top each window. But in addition to that, NumLock controls whether you can also change focus by clicking in the client area of the other window. NumLock off, you can change focus by clicking inside the other window. NumLock on, you can't. > I have tested here, with a couple of xterms and numlock key > activated (defaults here), and seems not to be any problem. Try NumLock key off. You can change focus even if there's no titlebar! And that's the behaviour that you're looking for, when you have windows without a titlebar. (xmms is another one...) Related to this is what happens in when ClickToFocus=3DFalse mode. You can stop qvwm from taking focus away when your mouse leaves a window by holding down the shift key. This is something a user might want to choose to do temporarily, and it doesn't stop the shift key from working as usual. But the NumLock thing is different. First, whichever way the user wants it, they are unlikely to want to change the behaviour temporarily. Also, it prevents the proper use of NumLock for numbers, cursor, etc etc. So I agree with Ali: The NumLock thing may have been intended as a feature, but to me it seems to be a bug. I suggest a new command in the .qvwmrc file, which specifies the behaviour. And this behaviour is off by default in the standard qvwmrc files. And NumLock will no longer change it when you're running. Any thoughts? Mitch. |

They'll of course point to the old site... I guess it needs updating. Hmm, I guess by the time we do the next official release, our website, etc, will be running. So I think it's ok to update the README.* files to point to the new site. And some time (after the new website goes live and we have some content in it), I would like to invite members of the old qvwm mailing list over to our new list. I have added these two things to my task list. > And, if I have questions on qvwm, such as, how to add PATH for > images (I discovered that you can put several ImagePath lines in > ~/.qvwmrc), Interesting! Paths is something I would like to look into: Paths for images, paths for program entries, paths for qvmrc files, etc. I think it's a good way of having qvwm adapt properly to changes made by the user, and changes made by a sysadmin, without having to hand-alter qvwmrc files. > where do I have to send them, here, or directly to Mitch? =20 If it's a question, I would suggest sending them to the list. I know very little about qvwm! :-) My role: As well as doing some setup stuff, I'm offering to review proposed changes to qvwm. When the changes are good, they can go into CVS. You can do the CVS stuff, or I'm happy to. So please, ask questions! :-) Mitch. |

Hi Ali, Thanks for your latest snapshot (14102003). Yesterday I looked at the differences between qvwm-1.1.12 and your latest snapshot. Some of your changes can go into qvwm pretty much immediately. And some other changes may take some time before they are ready. In particular, I would like to ask you some questions about the changes you're making, not because I think they're wrong (your understanding of both X programming and qvwm is much more than mine) but because I want to learn from you (as I'm sure the other guys do too). Unfortunately, I didn't get the time tonight to write up the qvwm-1.1.12/qvwm-11102003 changes. Tomorrow! :-D I did however have a look at the differences between 11102003 and 14102003. Please help me understand! :-) - The 3rd argument to XSetInputFocus() has changed pretty much throughout the code from RevertToParent to RevertToNone. What does this do? Why change it? What problem does it solve? What will users see differently? Also, that you needed to change XSetInputFocus in so many places indicates from an architectural point of view, this is something that could be "abstracted" into a separate single method, so the policy only needs to be set in one place. Maybe in the FocusMgr class? - Re: comment out "dragging = False" in src/icon.cc, what effect does this have? Is it a bug fix, or are you experimenting? - Is it necessary to call desktop.RedrawAllIcons()? Is a complete redraw necessary? (Could be a bit of a sledge- hammer fix). If you want to leave it as-is for the moment, would you consider putting a "// FIXME: Change this so we only redraw the icons we need to" comment in, so we can come back to it? - I see you've modified src/main.cc:initalize_user_conf_files() so it no longer is hard-coded to /root. I presume you're opening and closing files to see if they exist. FWIW you can also use the "access" system call for this... - As a minor point, there's a small typo in the name of "initalize_user_conf_files" - /initalize_/initialize_/. Anyway, that's my comments on the differences between your snapshots. I look forward to hearing from you so we can learn more about why you're making these changes. Thanks for what you're doing!
