ExecutionReport with status 'NEW' is the ack. If you comply with the FIX spec on message flow you will always be responding with this. You can also send "PENDING_NEW", which just acks the receipt of the message (probably at the gateway before the message is actually processed by order handling logic). There is no other more generalized 'ack' procedure than that for messages in general in FIX. Most initiators will (or at least should) be designed to expect an ExecutionReport within a fairly short period of sending out an order with one of these 2 statuses or some form of Reject.
