svn ignores

OK, Subversion experts, clue me in.  As you can see in the quesa-cvs  
mailing list, I tried to set an svn:ignore property on the root  
directory to make Subversion ignore .mode1v3 and .pbxuser files.  But  
these files still show up in svn status.
