NgSpice didn't manage to get off the Berkeley License, and is based on pretty old code. A better choice is Xyce - https://xyce.sandia.gov/ Also, the best way to do mixed-signal stuff is to use the analog simulator as the main framework with digital stuff plugging-in as models with PWL sources for boundaries (somewhat simpler than described I think). I was chatting to someone working on Xyce a couple of weeks ago, I'll post an update if they add support for doing that. Kev.
