Shouldn't be a problem. The handle is (well, was) accessed directly only in the spread() method, which checks for emptiness before accessing its value. Is QuantLibXL by any chance inheriting from SwapRateHelper and accessing the handle? May you investigate a bit, since you can reproduce the problem?
