#41 enable use of env variables

This is needed for some BSD installs that use /usr/local/share instead of /usr/share that is used on linux. If no env variables are available, it will default to the previous hard coded paths.
This is a patch I generated from a local fork that is a few weeks behind. (no other changes made)
