I'm quite sure that this IS the solution, though I'm absolutely confused as to 
why my local build acts differently than the 'official' Qt Mac build in this 
regard.

With the working-as-expected qmake, everything is mostly the same as on 
Linux/UNIX in general, only the 'make install' step is Mac OS X specific 
(using 'macdeployqt').
