I've never tried (dared) to statically link Qt, not even on Linux or Windows, 
although it should work... I also see no advantages, to be honest. And I've 
been told that beginning with Qt 5 static linking might not work at all.

So no, I've no idea what might have been changed here, I'm sorry. Anyway, it's 
also not required since 'macdeployqt' packages the framework with the app.
