Tony,
Would it be possible to install Qdvdauthor with synapyic (or other 
package manager)?
The repository I normally use is this one:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kxstudio-team/ppa/ubuntu 
YOUR_UBUNTU_VERSION_HERE
main
I think this works for Debian as well.
If you install it with a package manager is will be easier to see the 
missing dependencies.
