Hi all I've seen the mails over the last few weeks concerning the "New release of PYZOR now dubbed 'Bohuno'" and I'd like to register my objection to commercial products being advertised on this mailing list, no matter how compatible with pyzor they claim it is. I realise this may sound like I'm trying to pour cold water on what could be a promising project but lets just look for a second why I'm objecting. Unless a "New Pyzor" project is * released under the terms of a recognised opensource licence * making a reasonable effort to be backward compatible with existing Pyzor * allowing their source code to be peer reviewed then in my opinion it CANNOT be considered "the New Pyzor", "Pyzor compatible" maybe perhaps, but NOT the "new Pyzor". While I support any group that wishes to develop solutions to help kerb the spam problem, we need to be clear that Pyzor is OpenSource not commercial. Bohuno as its currently stands is a proprietary closed source application and NOT OpenSource. I registered the day I saw the mailing list post and was eager to see what could be done to further the Pyzor codebase, but unfortunately I've seen no reply to my registration email, even after multiple "registrations". I for one will not be installing any "new Pyzor" unless I can look at the source code and reassure myself its AOK. My clients security is not to to be trusted to commercial products that appear out of nowhere, claiming great things, no matter how slick their website is. If I want a commercial product I'll go buy one. Does anyone not connected with Bohuno have any reason why my above statements should not be considered correct? That is too bad. :-( One of the main reasons for writing pyzor (instead of just using already existing "razor" protocol and servers which do more or less the same thing as pyzor) was *precisly* to move away from closed-source backend. > But we encourage all to download the "remote" version that keeps a > copy. It is free. In such a situation, it would be prudent to avoid using the word "free" - some people might think of it as "free software" (as defined as FSF, in pyzors GPL etc.) and NOT your intended meaning of "you don't have to pay for it (yet), but we won't give you the source or any other rights". > Load the servers I maintained for a while was to much to handle so we > decided to rewrite the code and bring some more while we were at it. It would've been great if you decided to just improve on the existing pyzor server code, instead of rewriting it from scratch so you can prohibit people from benefiting from free software. Even if you decided that C or something was needed for speed, you still could've realeased it under GPL as was original pyzor code. Would you consider open sourcing it ? There are many admins which won't consider running untrusted code without source on their machines (and not only for security implications), and by open sourcing you would actually give back to the community you're taking from. And if your plans aren't locking-in the users so you can take advantage of them later, both you and the users would actually benefit from your open sourcing of code. (you get more users and popularity, users get the code they're comfortable with and can audit and improve on) -- Opinions above are GNU-copylefted. |

When developing a pyzord that could cope with the load it had we decided to go with a closed "back-end" which was/is backwards compatible with the existing Pyzor. To answer some of the questions raised on the list: Yes the back-end is "closed-source" we do plan to release the API specs so al can develop against it. But we encourage all to download the "remote" version that keeps a copy. It is free. -- not sure it runs on C64 -- would be great tough... :-) Load the servers I maintained for a while was to much to handle so we decided to rewrite the code and bring some more while we were at it. test the thunderbird plugin.. its using the api to talk to the backend... Hi "List", With great pleasure I present to you the long discussed, wanted & now finished new version of PYZOR now dubbed "Bohuno". And for those of you thinking, "duh", _yes_ we could not come up with a better name. Pyzor has been arround for while serving the Antispam needs, peeking to 1600 requests per second, for quite some time, and has served that purpose well. But we decided a bold move was needed and revamped, rewrote and remastered what made Pyzor successfull, and can present to you an complete rewritten back-end that can service up-to 10.000 hits per second, slave servers that are updated by the master, and client plugins you can include in your webmail environment. As Pyzor the Bohuno service-usage is free, download the plugin or slave-server, and register . please visit http://www.bohuno.com to find-out more and start using Bohuno. best regards, Milton ps.. of top some of your questions.. with answers .. : -- 1. / DO we have replication from the master DB to slaves we configure ? Yes we the slave-server DOES replicate to the master automatically.. -- 2. / Is Frank Tobin sill involved with the current project? NO, We tried contacting Frank to no avail, so we decided to just move on. The "Old" pyzord just could not take any more traffic.. -- 3. / Were do we report hashes ? All hashes are reported to the master server.. 82.94.255.100, from there they are distributed to the slaves. -- 4. / Is it free ? Yes.. Its free, just remember to invite us for beers.. -- 5. / Why do I need to register.. You need to register to use the plugins and also to use the slave.. registration is all about keeping the central database clean --and not tampered with -- etc. etc. .. --6. / So if I install the Slave, Do I set my internal mailhosts to check against the my slave ? Exact. Thats the setup.. you reports SPAM to the central DB and check against your slave.. --7. / Whats number of messages I can do on a slave ? On a dualcore 2 Ghz, 1GB mem, 40 Gig storage, (could be your laptop :) we peeked at 10.000 requests per second ... :-) hows that for speed .. We think thats be ample for most users.. Need more? Just setup more slaves and by a loadbalancer.. We use Foundry but you can Also use Netscaler, Alteon( oeps just gave my age away :-) , radware etc.etc. More questions ... visit the forum on http://www.bohuno.com/forum |

Hi, Thanks for the reply. How do I not run the pyzor client on root? I thought this was what I was doing when I ran sudo -u postfix pyzor ping? Hi, I have to report a false positive from Pyzor. The following mail: http://www.spamcop.net/sc?id=z2197956459zad563db03aa8dbd53cc827c4f05398ffz hits the Pyzor engine and only that (no hit for DCC nor Razor nor IXHash). I don't know how Pyzor hashes the message. Is it because the message only contains images? Thank you, Giampaolo |

In my spamassassin scoring it says my email is listed in Pyzor. What can I do to get it removed? Or how do I figure out why? Curtis LaMasters http://www.curtis-lamasters.com http://www.builtnetworks.com |

Hello All, I'd like to thank everyone, especially Dimitry and Milton for clarifying which ports need to open on the firewall for Pyzor to successfully check and report spam. As pyzor only uses UDP, I've closed the TCP port. I really prefer to have as few port open as possible. I currently have only UDP port 24441 open for inbound and outbound traffic (I'll test whether inbound is actually necessary in a day or two. I've confirmed that I'm pointing to the server at 82.94.255.100:24441. Thanks again everyone for your help! -- Carl -----Original Message----- From: pyz...@li...
