Summary: Confusing error message
Initial Comment:
I installed Python 2.6 yesterday using the standard Windows installer and, accepting all the defaults
Today I tried to install pywin32 but the installation failed with the message that it couldn't find Python 2.6 in the registry!
That was pretty confusing until I realized I had installed the 32-bit python and was trying to install the amd64 pywin32.
The installer should check for such cases and give a better error message.

Message:
Sorry, but this too is related to distutils bdist_wininst rather than
pywin32.
