@Chuck: we did not intentionally insert any malware there, and the file is built from source using AppVeyor. Either this is a false positive or someone tampered with your download.

I downloaded from source forge. when I uploaded to www.virustotal.com it showed that 9 engines detected some type of malware / adware. i'm going to take a chance and install it on a windows VM machine.

I just downloaded this file from SourceForge, and I got an alert from Malwarebytes about it. Following the suggestions above, I submitted the file to www.virustotal.com , where it came up as infected on 18 or 68 scanners.
I know that it's probably OK, but I still wanted to check in with the creators. What's the deal?

@Chuck: try uploading it to www.virustotal.com. It gets scanned by 50+ different AV products.

Windows Defender identified Trojan:Win32/Bitrep.A on my Windows VM machine
Chuck H.: I was able to reproduce it and the file is identical to the one here - https://ci.appveyor.com/project/shlomif/pysolfc/build/1.0.160/artifacts . Strange! Anyway, the file at https://ci.appveyor.com/project/shlomif/pysolfc/build/artifacts is perfectly clean and so I think I shall mint a new release soon.
Please try 2.4.0.
Shlomi, I downloaded the 2.4.0 version without any virus being detected and installed it successfully.
I also downloaded it to www.virustotal.com and only two engines detected an issue.
Kaspersky and ZoneAlarm both which detected Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Paph.hul
perhaps this is most likely a false positive.
Thanks for the great work that you are doing on this project.
Microsoft Security Essentials is flagging PySolFC_2.4.0_setup.exe now, with Zpevdo.A. Ran it through virustotal.com, and that came out clean.
Kaspersky Anti-virus detected Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Paph.hul. Version 2.4.0.
