-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I think it's safe to say that PyQt on the Mac is a bit fragile. The version of Eric that I bundled is quite old (2.4, released in May 2004; it's up to 2.61 now) as more recent versions are very crash-prone or won't even run. Given that PyQt has so many moving parts, when I got everything built and just running without crashes, I decided to leave it alone rather than track the updates in sip, PyQt, and Eric. I'll do another package once Qt/4 is out, and the bugs have been reported. Perhaps that will be more optimized for the Mac; certainly Qt 3 is far from perfect in this regard. Good evening and Happy Holidays; Well both of you ( Kevin and Bob) were evidently correct. I redid my OSx installation - left the apple python install alone and everything works fine. I will keep my meathooks from tampering with things for awhile but seriously thanks much for your help. jay Mutter On Dec 22, 2004, at 11:17 PM, pyq...@li... wrote: > Send Pyqt-mac-list mailing list submissions to > pyq...@li... > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/pyqt-mac-list > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > pyq...@li... > > You can reach the person managing the list at > pyq...@li... > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of Pyqt-mac-list digest..." > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. Jay, I am afraid Bob is right about reinstall of Panther to get Apple's version of Python working. I remember looking through the install CD's to see if I could find the python package but I think it is in the BSD subsystem and cannot be installed separately ? I did the same thing as you and originally tried to rely on the Fink version (for ZEM), but it did not work and I had to reinstall Apple's python. I ran into this problem trying to get ZopeEditManager working (a python - pyobjc app). Zachery Bir, the developer of that package told me that it probably would not work without Apple's version of python. It seems a little brittle to me because I thought one could download the newest version of Python, add the necessary modules and have a working system, but apparently the windowing system for a python/Aqua app relies on Apple's framework version of python. It was true for the pyobjc app and now seems to be true for a PyQt app. The symptom you mentioned sounds the same. That of double clicking the app and seeing the icon zoom out like it is going to open and then nothing happens. Nothing shows up in the dock. It is a big pain to reinstall and then do all of the updates, but it might be worth a try. Eric WILL work for you eventually but I think you are going to have to use Apple's python. Good luck (and happy holiday everyone), Brian P.S. Kevin - I noticed that my emails to the list are not showing up in the threads in the Mail app. Do I need to CC myself or something to keep the threads in order ? -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Jay, Your path looks correctly set up to me. If you have the Pythonmac extensions installed, that's important, as my Eric3 app bundle actually makes use of the Python interpreter embedded in the PythonIDE. (That will be corrected in the next release of the entire package.) Therefore, it's not clear to me why Eric3 isn't seeing the Qt module, assuming that you're running the Eric3 version from /Applications. I'm wondering if the problem is, in fact, because you replaced the Apple - -installed version of Python with your own framework build. My package assumes the standard Apple installation, and I believe the PyQt source assumes this also. I'm not an expert on the internals of framework builds of Python, but my understanding is that ripping out Apple's build of Python can break things in unexpected ways. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I've looked at my files, and it appears that my installer did not include the documentation. The Qt docs are easily downloaded from Trolltech, though, and one can easily create the directory in /Developer/Docoumentation/qt, so I'm not inclined to put together another whole installer. I probably will update the instructions on the website on how to get the docs, however. Look for that, and a general announcement, in the next couple of days. I'll also make a note to myself to include the docs for the next release of this package (probably after Qt 4 is released and Riverbank updates its packages accordingly). I have not had a problem with missing documentation, although I have had a problem or two with the general install. For example, I did not have a qtconfig.app until I recently reinstalled everything. But all is well now and I think my problems were due to having Fink's version of qt3 installed. I suspect the reason Eric is not opening is because there are multi-versions of Python installed. I think it is worthwhile to run a 'which python' to see where it is pointing. I had problems like Jay described with ZopeEditManager not properly opening unless it was using Apple's version of python (and pythonw). Since Fink installs python for other applications to work properly, there may be problems there. I have a link from /sw/bin/python that points to my /usr/bin/python which in turn points to the python2.3 version inside of /System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.3/bin/python. I did not create any of the links inside of /usr/bin because the Apple install of python took care of those. Another thing to check is your $PATH environment variable. Perhaps one of the other directories containing python comes before Apple's version. (the 'which python' will help with this, but it might be worthwhile running a $PATH at the command prompt just to make sure) Last, but not least. Although I am interested in developing applications for both Aqua and X11, after a few other problems with having both Fink's version of qt3 and Kevin's binary install for Aqua, I have removed the Fink version. I think I will add another user and then use that user account for any Qt/X11 development. What are other people on the list doing to have both versions coexist ? -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Brian, Thanks for documenting this--I'm glad it worked for you. You're right, a Fink install of Qt can make things a little hairy. My workaround for this is to comment out the "source /sw/bin/init.sh" line that Fink uses to get it loaded onto your PATH: if that is not commented out, then $QTDIR will point to /sw rather than /Developer/qt. That's another approach to try as well, for anyone who's interested. Hi Kevin, Thanks for the reply - so I finally got it working and all is well in the Aqua environment. I thought I would write up my experience in case anyone else has a similar problem getting the database adaptors to show up in Qt Designer. My main problem was a combination of the Fink QT installation crossing with your binary installation. Somehow it was pulling some pieces from the Fink install and including them with the /Developer/qt install. Two things needed to be done for me to successfully compile the postgresql adaptor for Aqua. First, I removed all things Qt from the Fink environment (except qt3-shlibs, because kde depends on them). Secondly, I needed to set an environment variable called QMAKESPEC in my ~/.profile. I set it to QMAKESPEC=darwin-g++. I just added it to the other Qt environment variables that you mentioned in the instructions. Don't forget to add it to the export line. Then I followed the directions in the Qt Users Manual about compiling the SQL drivers. My postgresql installation (just configured - not installed - in order to supply the necessary header files) was installed in /Users/Shared/. My regular postgresql installation was in /usr/local/pgsql/ (I typically install from source). After navigating to the source files for the sql drivers (/Developer/qt/plugins/src/sqldrivers/psql) I was ready for the qmake command. qmake -o Makefile "INCLUDEPATH+=/Users/Shared/postgresql-7.4.6/src/include /Users/Shared/postgresql-7.4.6/src/interfaces/libpq" "LIBS+=-L/usr/local/pgsql/lib -lpq" psql.pro Then use 'make' to install it (automatically) in the plugins directory. Open Qt Designer > Database Connections and with any luck, you should see the postgresql adaptor in the drop down menu. Phew !! I am happy to say I have all the pieces to make PyQt database applications...finally. Thanks again for putting together all the pieces to make this happen. Hi folks, I've installed the binary distribution of PyQt, Eric, etc.. Thanks very much, it works great. I want to use the SQL portion of the QT libraries but I am having trouble compiling a version that shows up in the Designer SQL Connection dialog box. It will compile into an *.so and it installs itself into the 'plugins' directory, but it will not show up in the connection box. Do I need to compile a shared library instead and if so, does anyone have any clues on how to do that ? Thanks very much, Brian |
