I compiled the latest snapshot and 1.0b1 on Panther, created an instance of the Cocoa-Python template and tried to compile and run it, but each time it crashes with a bus error when it gets to NibClassBuilder.extractClasses("MainMenu"). If there are problems with building Python-related apps and having them run on both 10.2 and 10.3, I'd like to know earlier rather than later. Thanks, Paul |

Of course, why don't you try and compile it and submit some bug reports about what works, what error messages come up, etc. and someone will try and fix it. I'm a member of ADC, so I have Panther, but it's not on my primary machine and I don't have a whole lot of free time to play around at the moment. -bob |

The methodname doesn't have underscores when using PyObjC, otherwise it is almost a normal initialiser. The init method must return self, and must call the superclass implementation of init (or technicly the 'designated initialiser' of the superclass). The following pattern should be used for initialisers: def init(self): self = super(MyClass, self).init() # Initialize this instance return self The primairy reason for not using __init__ is that the init method must be called explicitly for ObjC objects, have two different, yet simular, initialisers would be confusing. I apologize for not replying sooner. I just realized that I haven't been receiving Doc-SIG mail since June 26 when I reconfigured my email forwarding address. Dinu Gherman wrote: > I'm experimenting with a prototype reST editor on OS X, Looks cool! Are you aware of Gunnar Schwant's DocFactory? It uses wxPython. <http://docutils.sf.net/sandbox/gschwant/docfactory/doc/> > It's only a start, I'm just using docutils.core.publish_string(text, > writer_name='html'), but it raises for me several questions about: > > - changing the default CSS (or parts thereof) Easy to do with runtime settings. See "Configuration File Entries" in <http://docutils.sf.net/docs/tools.html>, specifically "stylesheet" and "stylesheet_path". Runtime settings can be passed to Docutils with "settings" (must be complete), "settings_overrides", and "settings_spec" parameters to "publish_string". (Some aspects of this may change in the near future, when we overhaul config file & runtime settings handling.) Also the "Stylesheets" section of "Docutils Front-End Tools" (below "html.py") may be useful. > - suppressing warning messages (e.g. about empty sections) If the document processing was user-initiated, there would be a lot less of this. Hello all, If I missed this on some FAQ, sorry. I am wondering if there is some preferred way of handling initialization of NSObject-derived Python classes in PyObjC? I am fine with calling "object.alloc( ).init( )," is there a way to have a "def init( self )" sort of function, that could call a super method at the end? It would be nice if __init__ was still called, but I can see how arguments could be made to the contrary. Thanks, Sean |

I have been using PyObjC with Xcode on Jaguar without problems. I installed pyobjc by expanding a tar in site-packages. I tried it under Panther and there were major problems with the Python framework. Xcode recognized it as a package in the "Add Frameworks" open dialog but when it was added it did not show up with a framework icon and lot's of files appeared in the target, especially __init__.py multiple times. I tried dragging the PyObjC folder from /S/L/F into the project and things got worse, _lots_ of files showed up in the target. Has anyone else seen these results or found a workaround or have I just screwed-up? Dan |

Bugs item #769443, was opened at 2003-07-10 20:13 Message generated for change (Tracker Item Submitted) made by Item Submitter You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=114534&aid=769443&group_id=14534 Category: None Group: None Status: Open Resolution: None Priority: 5 Submitted By: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Assigned to: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Summary: PyObCTools.Conversion inserts NSNulls into generated plists Initial Comment: Conversion.py's propertyListFromPythonCollection converts None into NSNull. However, NSNull isn't a property list type, so the resulting property list is invalid for archiving. The best way to handle None is best defined by the user (empty string, empty data, 0, etc) so the best fix is probably just to comment out the lines that handle None. This makes the conversion helper function convert None. The lines are the two starting at 46 of PyObjCTools/ Conversion.py, elif aPyCollection is None: return NSNull.null() py...@sa... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=114534&aid=769443&group_id=14534 |

I think I found a little bug in the DotView example from 1.0b1: It seems that the "Rulers" checkbox doesn't work. The rulers don't appear. ciao Martina |

I posted this over on CocoaDev and then realized that this might be something involving PyObjC since some of the items in the applcation's plist resource are being changed (particularly the executable and the bundle package type). So, I'm posting it here as well. My apologies if you are on both lists. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------- I'm building a new Cocoa application using PyObjC. When running, the icon appears in the dock correctly, but if the user drags the application icon to the dock, it will only go in the "document" area, not the "application" area. I figure I must have something wrong in my plist, but I don't see it. I deleted all other copies of the application and rebooted to ensure that it was using these definitions. Here is the plist definition from my build.py: infoPlist = Plist( CFBundleDevelopmentRegion='English', CFBundleExecutable='python', CFBundleGetInfoString='Goombah 0.2', CFBundleHelpBookFolder='Goombah Help', CFBundleHelpBookName='Goombah Help', CFBundleIconFile='Goombah.icns', CFBundleIdentifier='com.transpose.goombah', CFBundleInfoDictionaryVersion='6.0', CFBundleName='Goombah', CFBundlePackageType='APPL', CFBundleShortVersionString='0.2', CFBundleSignature='????', CFBundleVersion='Pre-Release', NSHumanReadableCopyright='Copyright 2003 Transpose, LLC All rights reserved.', NSMainNibFile='MainMenu', NSPrincipalClass='NSApplication' ) I notice that when I open the application file with Property List Editor, that the CFBundlePackageType appears as 'BNDL', but when I change it to 'APPL' with Property List Editor and reboot, there is no improvement - the user still cannot drag the application onto the dock, except in the "document" section. Well, sorry for spamming again... 0.5 now has simple splitting and replacing functionality, maybe not ideal in detail, but quite con- sistently combined with the other actions (match, search, etc.): http://python.net/~gherman/tmp/RegexPlor1.jpg http://python.net/~gherman/tmp/RegexPlor.tar.gz Probably needs something new for (possibly named) groups... which might cause trouble in the current "findall" functionality..., BTW. Also, I'm not sure if I can rely on the existanceof the sre module (which I'm using for getting at the re syntax overview docstring) in all versions of Python that might be installed? BTW, I did not use getNumberOfRows_columns_(), I used numberOfRows() and numberOfColumns() so nothing breaks for me. :-) Dan -- now on list |

In fact, for RegexPlor I'm using the following without even having run into getNumberOfRows_columns_: cols = mat.numberOfColumns() rows = mat.numberOfRows() As long as everything is nicely documented: go ahead! There is little change that you'll get the Linux part to work without a lot of work, the issue below is just the first and easiest problem. We currently do not support GNUstep and the code will not compile on GNUstep systems. Getting it to work requires writing some low-level functions to interface with the Objective-C runtime for GNUstep (actually the GNU runtime for Objective-C, as opposed to the Apple/NeXT one on MacOS X). While I'd like to have GNUstep support I currently don't care enough to perform the port myself, but enough to not rip the partial GNUstep support out. > > After installing the python-dev packages, running python setup.py > --help > produced the following: > > <snip build of libffi that worked> > Performing task: Generating wrappers & stubs > sh: line 1: /usr/bin/sw_vers: No such file or directory > Traceback (most recent call last): > File "Scripts/CodeGenerators/cocoa_generator.py", line 32, in ? > VER = '.'.join(VER.split('.')[:2]) > AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'split' > Task 'Generating wrappers & stubs' failed [256] The easiest way to work around this problem is to modify setup.py and make sure it doesn't call this script when on a GNUstep system. We have some (old) wrappers for the AppKit and Foundation frameworks that should work on GNUstep and those will automaticly be picked up when compiling the bridge. > > Now, 'locate sw_vers' produced nothing, as did 'apt-cache search > sw_vers', so > I went to Google. I *did* > read > somewhere (in a changelog? maybe?) that GNUstep support was being > removed > until a volunteer was found, so if necessary, take this as me stepping > forward... sw_vers is an OSX tool that solves the problem that 'uname -a' doesn't show usefull version information on OSX machines. Just like on Linux machines 'uname' shows the kernel version, which has no documented relation to the OS release. Our non-support for GNUstep is prominently featured on the website. IMHO the best way to proceed with a port to GNUstep would be to ignore the 'cocoa_generator.py' issues for now and try to get the core going first. This requires the implementation of a number of functions, IIRC in class-builder.m and objc_support.m. Some OSX-specific stuff may have crept into the code, that would require fixing as well. Good luck, Ronald |

It now only tries to call sw_vers on= =20 OSX machines. The next snag I ran into was farther down, where=20 cocoa_generator tries to run various commands 1) on OSX only things like=20 WebKit and AddressBook, but also 2) in an OSX specfic manner=20 (/System/Library/Frameworks, etc). I now have it checking for GNUstep and= =20 adjusting accordingly. My hacked cocoa_generator available upon request. = =20 The only garuntee is that it works for me :-) Now that it's getting to the actual build, I'm hitting the same snag I get= =20 when trying to build ocunit, namely that Gnu/GCC 3.3 doesn't ship with=20 objc/runtime.h, or various other .h files that are apparently available in= =20 OSX (objc/objc-class.h specifically). This breaks any calls to=20 class_add_method_list or (in ocunit) class_getClassMethod. Now, Marco=20 Sheurer was going to get back to me on what the proper fix is, but he hasn'= t=20 as of yet (this only came up last week, so I'm not crying foul). So, any suggestions? I'm in no rush, so I can afford to spend the time to= =20 work through these things.
