Because of categories and other "doodads of extension", it is possible for other pieces of code to extend the classes in ways you can't know. You could potentially do a trade-off at run-time, but I think the consistency of simply transliterating a ':' into a '_' is much easier. I understand the desire to conceive of the method call as something akin to optional keywords in Python, but they are definately not.=20 They may be polymorphic from one-another, but they are distinct messages, as in Smalltalk.
