Greetings, I'd like to give you a few updates about PyMOL and the changes within Schrodinger that affect PyMOL. First, I'm happy to announce that we plan on releasing PyMOL v1.4 within the next 1--2 months. The list of new features will be presented soon and we'll announce that release when it's posted. As usual, the academic builds will be ready near the start of the fall semester. We will be introducing a 64-bit MacPyMOL and deprecating the 32-bit version. Don't worry, though, the new version will work on your Mac OS X 10.5+, which is what we currently support. Alongside myself, we now have one person working on cross-platform infrastructure, builds, and integration, and a graphics developer who helped us implement the new volumes feature (coming soon in PyMOL v1.4; see http://pymol.org/volume). We are also planning to add more development resources to PyMOL to work on a wide range of projects, including overdue infrastructure projects. We will of course continue to support the open-source project and keep making academic builds free for students. Happily, we now have more people to help. Also, the source code for the PyMOL Web Services API has been pushed to the open-source repository. This is a new feature. To understand what this means and how to use it, after installing PyMOL, use FireFox/IE to read pymol/modules/web/examples/index.html, from where you installed PyMOL. Please make sure you read and understand associating the PWG file extension with the new version of PyMOL. There should be plenty of information and examples to get you started. Last, please be warned that ATI does not support 120Hz stereoscopic 3D viewing. Therefore, those who are buying the new MacPros, iMacs, or machines with ATI cards, you will need to either use a different stereo viewing mode (Zalman, anaglyph, etc) or acquire an NVidia Quadro card. This is not our doing: we would love to see stereoscopic 3D supported more broadly. Cheers, -- Jason -- Jason Vertrees, PhD PyMOL Product Manager Schrodinger, LLC (e) Jas...@sc...
