The attached setup.py which builds an exe for the 
matplotlib/examples/embedding_in_wx.py creates a dist folder of:

27,1 Mb, with 8 folders and 181 files

This is on Win Vista with:
# Python 2.5 (r25:51908, Sep 19 2006, 09:52:17) [MSC v.1310 32 bit (Intel)]
# wxPython 2.8.4.0, Boa Constructor 0.6.0

Maybe this helps you find out what additional stuff is getting pulled in 
by your script (you can't only look at the setup.py).
