I use py2exe with mxDateTime all the time so I know it does work.
Which version of py2exe are you using? It sounds like you may not be using
the latest version.

I reported this error a while back and I believe it has been fixed
(otherwise you can find the patch in the archives)
When bundling files, py2exe was joining module paths with a '.' instead of
the path separation character.

Ie. it was looking for   mx.DateTime.mxDateTime instead of
mx\DateTime\mxDateTime
