How did you run the "setup.py"?

Do you have multiple Python installations?

I would suggest that you re-install py2exe, for Python 2.5 using the 
file "py2exe-0.6.9.win32-py2.5.exe".

Then test it in the python prompt:  import py2exe, py2exe.__version__ 
and you should see this:

Python 2.5.2 (r252:60911, Feb 21 2008, 13:11:45) [MSC v.1310 32 bit 
(Intel)] on
win32
Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.
 >>> import py2exe
 >>> py2exe.__version__
'0.6.9'
