Dear Serge, We unfortunately don't support PSMATCHING for SPSS anymore, because with each new version of SPSS, we had to find the correct version for R to work with, and it is just simpler to use R directly. Dear Luca, We are not actively supporting PSMATCHING anymore, and suggest that people use MatchIt in R. Your particular error stems from certain packages not being installed in R, specifically "RItools", "MatchIt", and "cem". One work-around is to go into R directly and install them using the command: install.packages("MatchIt") However, one issue with this is that different versions of SPSS require different versions of R, which in turn require different versions of packages. Dear Tanvi, Unfortunately PSMATCHING is no longer actively supported. With every new SPSS version we had to update the extension and with the general move to R, it just didn't seem worth it. Your best bet is to use MatchIt in R. SPSS used to publish which R version you needed for which SPSS version. This made updating difficult because PSMATCHING relied on R packages that also needed specific R versions. That's a difficult one to diagnose. Does this error happen only with your actual dataset? Can you create a toy dataset (3 variables, treatment, outcome, one covariate) with maybe 20 cases or so. It might be that the dataset is too large. It's strange that there is no error, which makes debugging difficult. I think I have successfully integrated SPSS v23, the R integration package for 23, and R 3.1.1, and psmatching 3.04. I had to download a few additional tools for R. When I run the program PS Matching, I do not see any errors in the syntax which I think is a good sign. However, the case count in the bottom right next to the processing area seems to get stuck on a number; then eventually the PSMATCHING program will stop and there will be no output. No matching, no plots. I would appreciate any suggestions....

Hello, Unfortunately we stopped support of the program beyond SPSS 25 (since most people are switching to R these days). If you can't make it run in SPSS, we now advise to simply use MachIt directly in R. Hello! I am running PS matching 3.04 with SPSS v26 and have found it to be a very handy tool. I'm going thru a trial and error process with different variables as covariates and different matching algorithms to determine which leads to the most improved balance after matching. With a particular set of 2 covariates, I am finding that, under a variety of matching algorithms, the propensity scores yielded are only 1's and 0's. Does anyone know what this means? Thank you! Hi everyone, I am having an issue with PSMATCHING. I have tried psmatching versions 3.04 and 2. Ever time I run the program on SPSS version 23, put the variables in, and wait for the output, the processor will run and count cases up to the mid 100,000s, then get stuck and never produce an output. I have tried on both PC and Mac. I believe my R-plug-in is working because when I put in : Beging program R. x <- "R plug-in is working properly" x End program. I get no error messages. Hi I have got SPSS23 and have downloaded the R and r plug in and essentials. I ave the PS icon but when I try to run PS I get an error missing values. Hi, I'm using SPSS V 24 and have installed PSMatching per the instructions because the built in version doesn't have all the features I need. I saw in demonstrations for older versions, there was an option to choose 1:1 or 1:Many? is there an alternative way to do so? every time I run the analysis I am getting Many:1 and I really like to do a 1:1 Matching. Hello, It indeed seems like SPSS 25 has created some issues with the plug-in. We will try to look into this sometime in the future. Using an older version of SPSS is a possibility, but as you noted, it comes with the issue of having to download an outdated R version. Hello-I have been using SPSS 25 and have been using the psm3.03 extension. I have also been using multiple imputation. From my own experience and from what I saw from a previous comment, SPSS 25 is unable to use all of the imputations. I have SPSS 21 in addition to 25 and was going to try to do this in the older version. However, SPSS 21 says I need the R 2.14 plug in. Every time I go to download this, it is unable to download. Has anyone had similar issues? It says I need to download an older version...

Very mysterious indeed that it would run on a PC but not on a Mac. IF the versions of SPSS and R were the same on both machines, then it might be difficult to pinpoint the error. If the versions were different this may provide a clue as to where the problem lies. Based on this, and other comments that we have received, it seems that SPSS 25 may have broken some features. We will need to investigate this first, and issue a patch. At the moment, the best bet would be to try to run this with an older version of SPSS, if at all possible. A cumbersome alternative would be to run the imputed datasets manually, and then record, and combine the estimates by hand - tedious, but possible. I am trying to run PSMatching on a multiply imputed dataset in SPSS 25 using PSMatching3.04. I was previously able to run PSMatching on an MI dataset in SPSS 20 with R2.12. Since the switch to SPSS 25, it will only run PSMatching on the first imputation, or brings over some iterations of the matched cases but not all. Is there any way to run this in SPSS 25 while keeping all iterations of the matched cases?

Hi Fernando, SPSS updates may break the plugin as it changes things here and there. You may also want to look at R packages for propensity score matching. The propensity score is always estimated without any knowledge of the outcome variable. And yes, each row is assumed to be a single individual for which such a propensity score is being estimated. You are saying that the latest version simply assumes each row of the dataset as an independent observation (i.e., participant, subject, case, etc.) and analyze it independently by the OUTCOME.
