Nice to see this mailing list working!
Here goes the first question.

I have translated some high level UI items to Russian on
http://l10n.project-open.net The process of in-place localization is pretty
convenient and great since I can see a context of a string being localized.

At the same time such process it is quite slow and routine for long
descriptive strings that can be translated only one way.

Please let me know how to export/import all localizable resources to XML or
CSV. At least I would like to analyse a project scope and find the most
repetitive strings/terms.
If possible, I would also like to translate long descriptive strings (which
are not UI items) offline to save time and keep better consistency.

If you still have doubts about this, I will experiment with temporary locale
(like ru_XX) first and if successful, import translations in "main" Russian
locale.

So... my question is: how to get all the content offline (and back online)?
I see "Import all messages" and "Export all messages" commands at
http://l10n.project-open.net/acs-lang/admin/ but I do not know where
export/import files are located.

I like the approach suggested by Michael below:

1) Export into XML, translate offline, reimport
2) Adjust online, where a context is given. Error messages that are not that
apparent could be cleared up in the list.

Please let us know if there is an ability to work with translatable ]po[
content offline to maintain consistency and speed up the process.

I agree with Dmitry about the offline translation. I'm used to work with a
TM (in my case DejaVu, although I will try Frank's TinyTM soon, too - I
promise), which is only possible offline. On the other hand I understand the
concerns of the Project-Open team, mainly because there is a high number of
terms that should be translated in a given context (I the past I have
translated several menu items and UI messages in ]PO[ wrong, too by editing
the XML-exports without seeing the context).

I think the main point of Dmitry's remarks is that we should be able to see
the project's scope, because:
1) We don't know whether we will actually cover all the existing/installed
packages or miss something
2) There are quite a few messages (informational, warnings, errors) that are
not being shown until you trigger the corresponding event.

My suggestion is to work in two stages:
1) Export into XML, translate offline, reimport
2) Adjust online, where a context is given. Error messages that are not that
apparent could be cleared up in the list.

I remember having exported and imported messages in the past (4 years ago),
but some things might have changed meanwhile. Frank, can you give us a
helping hand?

Hi Dmitry,

I've "tarred" the catalog files for English, Spanish and German.
They are located in:
http://l10n.project-open.net/intranet-filestorage/ 
They also appear in the Filestorage component at the "Home" page.

You can now take the English version, unpack it at you computer and
translate the contents via TagEditor.
Then please pack the files (preferably in the same format and directory
structure) and upload them to the filestorage of the L10n server.

For extracting the contents you'll need my help (it needs to be 
done from the operating-system level).

Basically, there are basically no Russian translations yet for the

[project-open-localization] Localizers user group

I've created a new user group called "Localizers" in the 
]PO[-localization server.

This way you can lookup the members of our community just by filtering 
the users list (apply "Localizers" filter) under:

Please complain if you don't find you listed there.

To the ones who are not that experienced with using the language module 
for online translation: please write me for assistance. I'm in the 
process of preparing a small video tutorial on this subject.

[project-open-localization] What happens when you reimport XML-catalogue files?

This one is for the ]PO[/OpenACS gurus there:

If  you reimport an XML-catalogue export (one taken from my local system 
already localized) into the Localization server, will the system import 
my translation into the database and leave the "holes" in English, so 
that when exporting again into XML I will get the complete up-to-date 
set of messages (a mix of messages in Spanish - in my case - and in 
US-English actually)? Or will the keys for the "missing" messages be 
deleted?

Hi,

Let me rephrase your question to see if I really got it:

- You want to merge the translation in your "local" ]po[
  with the translations in the L10n-server.

- You want to give priority to the terms in the L10n-
  Server.


In order to perform this merge I'd recommend you the
following:

1. Export the "catalog" files from the L10n-server

2. Copy them to your local system

3. Import the catalog files via /acs-lang/admin/ "Import
   all strings"

This way, all the translations from the L10n-server over-
write the translations in your server.

Then:

4. Export your "catalog" files and

5. extract and import your catalogs in the L10n server.


Does this make sense or did I get you wrong?


As an alternative, you could

1. Export all strings at L10n
2. Import your catalogs
3. Re-import the strings from 1)

That should have the same effect.

Hello Frank,

thanks for your detailed explanation. I was thinking about another 
thing, but I guess the bottom line is the same.

My current 3.4-install was created half a year ago. I guess that the 
catalogue files are not coincident with the ones that we have now in the 
L10n-server, because new messages have been added and internationalized 
(new packages, new UI implementations).

Now I have two choices:

1. To upload my catalogue files as they are, so that you can place them 
in their locations at OS-level and import them. My concern: will be the 
new messages from the L10n-server be deleted by this "brute force" 
overwriting...?

2. To download the catalogue files from the L10n-server, import them and 
hope my pre-existing translations won't be overwritten by the texts from 
the L10n server.

So, right, what I want to do is merge files, but keep my local 
translation and add the new messages (keys) to my install (or the other 
way round: replace the translations in the L10n server with my 
translations, but without destroying the new messages, because my 
exported catalogue files probably won't contain all the keys).

Does it sound too convoluted?

Hi Dmitry,

I've "tarred" the catalog files for English, Spanish and German.
They are located in:
<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="http://l10n.project-open.net/intranet-filestorage/">http://l10n.project-open.net/intranet-filestorage/</a>
They also appear in the Filestorage component at the "Home" page.

You can now take the English version, unpack it at you computer and 
translate the contents via TagEditor.
Then please pack the files (preferably in the same format and 
directory
structure) and upload them to the filestorage of the L10n server.

For extracting the contents you'll need my help (it needs to be done 
from the operating-system level).

[project-open-localization] Second batch of Russian translations

Hi Frank,

I've uploaded second (biggest) batch of Russian translation to PO server:
http://l10n.project-open.net/intranet/download/home/0/Files_for_reimport_to_

Could you please import localized strings back to l10n server so they are
visible in interface?

IMPORTANT!!! To avoid replacement of correct translations made in native PO
Localization mode via user interface by translations that have been made
offline, could you please:
1. Export all translations currently existing on PO l10n server to XML files
and keep them in safe place. 
2. Import translations from the files I uploaded today.
3. Import translations from the files created in step 1 to keep verified
translations on the top of the rest.

Once this is done, could you please let me know so that I can check
translations in context and "polish" them if necessary.

P.S. There are just a few modules left to be localized to Russian. Hope to
finish the whole localization in 1-2 weeks ;-)
BTW do we have a kind of deadline, i.e. date when ]po[ 3.4 official release
is built?
I thought we should have finished in August but translation is still
on-going for sone languages and no reminders with any specific deadlines in
this group ;-)
