It seems a bit strange that when a customer logs in they have certain tabs on the top menu hidden by default, however many fields on the side menu are not hidden at all, and if they try to navigate to them they get a message saying they don't have access to it. I couldn't find any documentation
I would have thought the sensible thing to do would be to go to admin>menus and configure which items show, but I can't find this feature for the SIDE menu. I don't really want to totally disable it but they should only have access to certain areas - for example, project management, helpdesk, invoices perhaps, conditional on their permissions.

I agree on this part. There should be a config page for side menu as well. If not, it is very confusing. Minimally, it should allow us to hide the side menu.
Set Parameter "ShowLeftFunctionalMenupP" to '0' to hide the sidemenu. To hide Menu items for customers please configure menus accordingly: ADMIN->Menus
Besides we will introduce soon a new navigation concept.
Agree. Maybe remove the side-menu completely?
Next version, though...

Thought I will share my opinion. The side-menu is quite effective but the menu configuration needs to act the same way as top menu. If we want to block access to the top menu for a particular user profile, then it applies to the side-menu as well.
