Well, today I've found some time to install OpenSSL 0.9.8o on my
openSUSE 11.0 x86_64 system. My answer took a bit longer because the
update of the OpenSSL libraries must be done carefully to not end up
with an unstable system. However, everything still runs smoothly.

Good news: The previously observed SSL_shutdown() error with lftp
4.0.9 is obviously gone with OpenSSL 0.9.8o and ProFTPD 1.3.3.a.

As version 1.3.3 of ProFTPD shows the previosly described problems
with SSL/TLS connections (mod_tls), I did no further tests with it.
