I have followed the normal instructions for installing on two completely different machines running windows 7.

Both have the issue of asking for me to choose a default program to open javaw.exe when I try to use the shortcuts.

If I run the program from the .jar file I don't get the PSP for engineers.

I need this to do my uni work and I can't succeed in both windows or linux. What am I doing wrong?

This problem seems to be caused by recent updates to Java, released by Oracle. These recent updates like to uninstall older versions of Java; then your shortcut may be pointing to a version of Java that no longer exists.

Often it is possible to fix the shortcuts just by running the Process Dashboard installer again. You don't need to uninstall the Process Dashboard first; just install a second time and accept all of the default values. In the next-to-last screen, the installer will recreate the shortcuts, hopefully using the new path to javaw.exe.

If that doesn't help, you can try repairing the shortcuts manually. Here are the steps on Windows:

    • Right-click on the icon and choose Properties
    • In the shortcut properties, put your mouse in the Target field. Press the "Home" key to move to the beginning of that field.
    • Delete all of the characters that precede javaw.exe. If javaw.exe is followed by a double-quote character, remove that too.
    • Press OK to save this change. As you do, Windows will find and fill in the appropriate path to javaw.exe
    • Now try using the shortcut again.

If you have more than one shortcut (for example, team and personal dashboards), you will need to repeat these steps for each one.

If these steps do not work for you, please feel free to contact me directly (tuma at users.sourceforge.net) and I can help you troubleshoot.
